Revived by islamic scholars (al-razi, ibn sina) treatment wards for mad found across muslim world. In chrisian europe, some cited spiritual basis for madness, others argued for imbalance of humours (biological) - yellow bile, black bile, phlegm, etc. treatment in monasteries - monks or nuns would treat them. Some witches and madmen (especially dangerous) burnt at the stakes, etc. others treated through prayer, bloodleing, whipping, yet most stayed with family.
