Madness-> mental illness, if they stopped eating, they were sick? . When a person is behaving in an unusual way we think of it as being sick. We speak of mental illnesses as a very common thing, stats etc. treatment/conception of mentally ill does not necessarily fit simply story of medical progress. What we believe to be true now will not be true forever. Earliest recordings from 2nd c. bce, potentially mania, depression, & delusions. Not being diagnosed with disorders, instead aspects of their experience were being described, can"t assume that its one and the same. Tell us that people had mental experiences that sound like modern days mental illnesses. Hippocrates and galen-> situated madness in brain (look at brain, find that its diseased) Rome falls, medicine declines. revived by islamic scholars (al-razi, ibn sina) treatment. Demons? bad relationship with god"s, learned behaviour wards for mad found across muslim world.
