Lecture 8b the limits of mental health . Diagnosis related to addictions in the dsm. Internet gaming disorder proposed to be included in the dsm (being considered, research done in east asia: doesn"t include porn, social media, phone use. Where"s caffeine: not in the dsm, lots of people get addicted, people rely on it and go through withdrawal, the consequences aren"t as bad as most, so prevalent/common that we don"t think of it as an addiction. Some estimates suggest that one in ten people could be diagnosed with a personality disorder, other guess higher. People with personality disorders may: have trouble living with themselves or others, have difficulty learning/changing from past experiences, find it difficult to control behaviour, experience significant problems with work. Tend to be very difficult to treat, low rates of self-reporting. Histrionic pd: constantly seeking attention, with great emphasis on personal appearance. Prone to excessive emotion and unstable moods, very sensitive to other"s approval.
