HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Schizophrenia, Biology Of Depression, Medical Model
Document Summary
Mental illness is like any other illness, physical illness, lesions, viruses, and genetics cause malfunctions in the brain. Has symptoms, diagnoses and treatment, focuses on the individual. Some say it"s an attempt to cut others out of the treatment process. Is about the mind, not the brain, an abstract concept, not the physical brain. Mental disorder arises from internal mental processes that reflect the interaction of the individual with their environment. Mental illness is about their roles in life, and the resources they have access to have access to. It"s organized in a hierarchy, and the highest will be protected, those lowest will suffer. Mental illness is a thing that truly exists, stress makes you more likely to suffer, therefore the lowest in the hierarchy will suffer most. The power structure of society labels behaviours of the lower in the structure as mentally ill. The highest have the power to decide what is normal or abnormal.
