Mental illness does not have an exact de nition --it is subjective to the "eye of the beholder" Being gay was considered to be a mental illness before the 1900"s. Mental disorders are characterized by their e ect on: thought behaviour mood. Some disorders only a ect one of these elements whereas others a ect all three. A spiritual problem (possession, problematic relationship with god) A somatic problem --or a bodily problem (psychopharmaceuticals) A personal problem (moral failing, problems in living) A biological disease like any other, with viruses, lesions and genetics causing malfunctions in the brain. Focuses on the biological aspect of mental illness. There is no universally accepted scanned image of a brain that deems one mentally ill vs mentally healthy: the psychological model. Focuses on the mind --not the same as the brain, more of an abstract concept. Also focus on the individual, but take into consideration mental/psychic processes.
