They looked at not only hoplites (could afford their equipment), they looked in the poor sections for light-armed troops (could not afford equipment, had some equipment- shield, helmet, javelins) Rural citizens lost a lot and went to the city and tried to make a life out of not much. More of the small farm holders were hit from the war, with only a few wealthy being hit economically. Created a large difference of class (wealth and poor) The urban poor (farmers who came to the city) There was recovery of economics- however the polis state and government were badly injured. Political instability, nightmare of stasis stayed in the 4th century.
