In 404, sparta stood unchallenged, with hegemonic power over all of greece. Sparta chose to spare the city, but to suppress her democracy. Yet, by 371, sparta was reduced forever to a minor power, a faded memory of past glory, Athens, its democracy flourishing, had come back so strongly that she could aspire again to domination of greece. Yet she faced an unexpected rival in thebes, whose sudden rise had been the cause of. The dream of dominion would elude both these powers. Instead, the story of the fourth century continued to be one of ceaseless struggle for power, constant warfare, and ever shifting alliances among the greek states, with none able ever to come out on top. But then, unexpectedly, stability, unity, and a common peace did come to greece, but only through defeat and domination by a foreign power.
