ARTSSCI 1A06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Haemon, Ismene, Phronesis
Document Summary
Moderation cannot fully sort out the complexities of conflict. Many believe that creon and antigone appeal to separate orthodoxies. Antigone to hades and belowground, and creon to his power. In this sense, they are both equally stubborn. She is in love with the impossible, that which humans cannot solve. This is where antigone takes her stand, which is why she"s willing to stand her ground. Her deinotic willingness to suffer the political consequences of her practical wisdom is what gains her the eventual respect/support of her fellow citizens (including haemon) Despite creon"s eloquent speeches, he can"t actually relate everything into his practices of judgement. Of course he claims antigone only reverences hades; calling this reverencing for the dead. Like how ismene says antigone has "a hot heart for cold things" They say antigone is autonomous, self-willed in her temper. Antigone doesn"t see herself this way at all, however.
