ARTSSCI 1A06 Chapter Notes - Chapter Gorgias: Callicles, Tyrant

34 views2 pages

Document Summary

The trap: if an orator teaches his pupils about what is right, then the teacher orator is to blame if his pupil makes wrongful use of his oratory skills to persuade an audience. This contradicts what gorgias said about the orator himself being to blame if he misuses his abilities. I disagree: socrates and gorgias seem to believe that simply learning about what is right will make a man righteous. Morality can"t be compared to physical/factual arts like musicians learning music. Irrational thing to do (satisfaction of desires for pleasure) But they don"t do what they really want, because they are ignorant of what is in their best interests. Orators/tyrants can"t do this because they are always misled about their real interests (the ends of their actions) So when they do evil deeds, they don"t do what"s good for themselves and don"t have real power.
