PSYC 333 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Symbolic Interactionism, Normative Social Influence, Skin Cancer
Document Summary
Perceived superiority (and inferiority) how we compare ourselves to people in our social world (better/less than average effect) When we make judgements about the self, it is often by way of comparisons to others. Our sense of self is shaped by how others see us. The sef is developed and understood in the social realm. Others" appraisals shape our understanding of ourselves. How others see us = the way we see ourselves (taken to extreme-no other self knowledge) ( reality doesn"t exist out there rather reality is actively created as we act. Correlations between self-views and other views are small. However, self views correlate highly with how *we think* others see us. Some distortion when we think about ourselves (illusions) We tend to distort the feedback we receive from others. See our strengths as unique and our weaknesses as common. Overestimate the attention we attract from others. People don"t always tell us what they really think of us.
