Civil wars last longer than interstate wars. 6 years avg. interstate 3 years avg. civil wars. What helps rebel groups overcome collective action problems: Strong beliefs, strong motivation: participate and fight (eg any good. Strong dissatisfaction, strong motivation: how bad the status quo has an impact on the ability of the group to overcome their problems. Strong solidarity/collective identity: ties and links between the group contributes to the groups ability to overcome problems. Strong leadership (manipulation): group leaders try to make the group perceive the status quo worse than it actually is, to push the group to participate. Political culture: some cultures embrace negotiation compromise and non violence. An effective apparatus of repression: rich countries have the wealth to pay and equip ur forces better, thus prepare them better for a civil war--there are large costs if a war was to happen in a poor country.
