NUR1 320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Abdominal Pain, Emotional Isolation, Immunotherapy
Document Summary
Hematopoiesis: process of blood cell growth, division, and di erentiation. It begins with a basic cell known as the pluripotent hematopoietic stem cell. Pluripotent stem cells have the ability to divide and produce other stem cells or to produce hematopoietic progenitor cells that become mature blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Stem cell splits into either myeloid (some wbc, rbc and platelets) or lymphoid (wbcs including b and t cells and plasma cells). Fever persisted, hepatomegaly => liver biopsy showing all. Blood cancers: leukemia: cancer found in blood and bone marrow. Rapid production of abnormal wbc"s unable to fight infection, impaired production of rbc"s and platelets by bone marrow due to overcrowding: lymphoma: cancer that affects the lymphatic system. Rapid procution of malignant lymphocytes (called lymphoma cells) accumulate and form collections called tumors in lymph nodes and other body parts, impaired immune system: myeloma: cancer of plasma cells.
