The stage running time is about 90 minutes; a relatively short play even by today"s standards. The play has no interludes, only pantomimes were the actors move around on the stage and act like no one is watching them. Interludes often break the illusion of the play, give the audience time to discuss the play, and serve as time for elaborate set changes. Strindberg refers to theatre as a type of hypnosis, the idea of the suspension of dis-belief. I(cid:374) this play, there"s a lot of lo(cid:374)g (cid:373)o(cid:374)ologues (cid:449)hich (cid:449)as(cid:374)"t very common at the time. Miss julie shows a very unusual approach to character and how human beings work. Strindberg in the preface said he wants his characters to be characterless in the sense that there is no stereotype to compare them to. The idea of humans as predictable mechanical beings. Julie is a powerful refusal of that scientific naturalistic gaze which is done through the characters.
