Jerome"s motive here was to preserve the books he found in septugint, the ancient greek translation of the hebrew bible. To him they were part of the scriptural tradition: re-adjudicating scripture. But not all of these ancient decisions about scripture were up for re adjudication. The tridentine council thus had to make a decision. It decided to side with jerome"s vulgate: finalizing the bible. In general, the council of trent reaffirmed the vulgate as a legitimate and authoritative version of sacred scripture. In doing so it also decreed which books count as biblical for the first time in church history: sources of authority. This made it very clear that the church working through the council was the true source of. The scripture only reformers were therefore entirely wrong in thinking that scripture simply emerged: spiritual authority. It was the spirit that guided them to the correct reading of scripture, not any institution for the reformers.
