HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 95: Old Testament, Manichaeism, Vulgate
Document Summary
The council of trent outlasted so many popes. It was often interrupted: questions at the council. When it convened in 1545, the main questions before the council were: What the source of ultimate authority in christian teaching. And if luther was right in justification: dealing with scripture. In its first few years, the council decided against any sort of scripture only. It also needed to be interpreted in light of traditional authorities. It helped shape the scope of scripture itself: tradition and scripture. Even luther agreed that tradition provided the guiderails for scriptural exegesis. They recalled the fact that it was the community of believers that first defined what counted as scripture: recalling augustine. The tridentine fathers had augustine on their side. He was one of the tradition"s most influential authorities. He said himself he would have never believed in the scriptures if the authority of the church hadn"t moved him to do so: augustine"s claim.
