HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 71: Heinrich Bullinger, Ludwig Lavater, Huldrych Zwingli
Document Summary
By the mid 1520s, zwingli reforms had reached a new level of intensity. As in karlstadt"s wittenberg, iconoclasm led to the churches being stripped of their art. Religious orders began to disband: the eucharist issue. One of ulrich"s most controversial positions was his attack on eucharist real presence. Even melanchthon and luther, enemies of transubstantiation never dreamt of reducing communion to a commemoration sans presence: zwingli and bullinger. In defending his extreme reformers, zwingli leaned on his prot g , heinrich bullinger. Bullinger would later emerge as a fierce critic of luther"s anti-judaism: bullinger"s nephew. His nephew, the reformer ludwig lavater, later work a book entitled: bern 1528. In 1528, both zwingli and bullinger travelled to the swiss city of bern. They used scripture alone to decry the papacy and argue against celibacy. The reap presence and any hint of justification by works: zwingli"s troubles.
