HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 72: Johannes Oecolampadius, Reformation In Switzerland, Real Presence Of Christ In The Eucharist
Document Summary
In 1531, zwingli marched out alongside the soldiers of zurich to face the catholics. He left bullinger and other swiss leaders to carry on the dream of reform. The other key swiss reformer at this stage was him, aka johann hausschein. Not swiss himself, his humanist pursuits brought him to basel. They exiled erasmus for doing his work: his turn. Around 1522, johannes decided to abandon his life as a catholic humanist. His location in switzerland soon brought him into closer contact with the reforms of zwingli in. Over the course of the 1520s, johannes became increasingly zwinglian. In 1528, he supported zwingli and bullinger at the bern dispute. In 1529 he argued against luther and in favour of zwingli at the colloquy of marbug. Eventually, he succeeded in bringing zwingli"s reforms to the city of basel. He died shortly after the death of zwingli in battle in 1531.
