HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Making Money
Document Summary
Mix of economic and social classes in italian towns during the renaissance carried the importance of an individual"s qualities rather than their status from their birth: religion wise, christianity was declining. Lack of moral restraints caused ethical crises where "vices" came with an excess of individualism. The middle ages weren"t as dark as the 14th and 15th centuries as many italians thought. The belief was held that italians were separated and different than the styles and values of the middle ages: styles, ideas, and antiquities used in the renaissance were not new. They were borrowed during the middle ages but used differently and skillfully. Forms of classical genres and architectural styles had a different, vital spirit being recaptured from those forms. The renaissance was practicing skills and creating art, thinking ideas close to the classical past. Provided guides to: life, politics, education, ethics, morals, learning, art. Such ideals could be put into a code of behaviour or structures of beliefs.
