Renaissance: rebirth, renewal, re-emergence, possible date ranges could be from 1300-1700 to 1450-1550. Renaissance ideal was forged in opposition to the gothic middle ages. Stuck in between glory days of ancient greece or rome. New golden age reborn in florence or rotterdam: the middle ages, unlike the renaissance was not self designation. Medieval people didn"t think they were living between a golden age and rebirth. Dante, a medieval figure, is treated as renaissance. The early medieval dark ages was long gone: an era of sophisticated, intellectual christianity dawned already. Renaissance figures for the most part wouldn"t be rejecting christianity or christian theology. Many would question the sophisticated forms of christian thought in the 14th century: the renaissance was a stylistic rebirth. Classical style would return and push out the scholastic systematisers. In visual art, naturalism would be pursued with increasing vigour.
