Social skills are socially signi cant behaviours, that if not acquired, can lead to relationship challenges, depression, isolation, conduct disorders, etc. Social skills lead to social competence: verbal and non-verbal responses, eye contact and facial expressions, tone and volume of voice, posture, gestures. Social competence: microlevel social skills, used in the right conditions, in the the right amounts to meet expectations of others, while monitoring our own responses, along with monitoring the responses of others & changes in context. The change in sd is minimal, and a slight change can signal a need for a di erent response. Skill de cit: learner does not have the skill in their repertoire. Performance de cit: the skill is in the repertoire, but they fail to use it reliably or in the wrong context: may occur due to: cognitive de cit, intervening problem behaviours, distractions. Assessing social skills: interviews, rating scales, questionnaires, direct observation.
