BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Gartner, Ovoviviparity, Altricial
Document Summary
Turtles don"t guard their eggs or young: lay eggs in a spot & cover it up, soil temperatures decide the sex of the baby turtles. Walking stick eggs end up underground, but aren"t placed there by female: female lays eggs on ground, eggs get transported by transport ants. Carried by ants for edible capitulum: baby walking sticks look like ants. Northern water & gartner snakes hold eggs internally until they hatch: holding eggs inside until they hatch called ovoviviparity, eggs aren"t nourished internally; no placental connection, the young that are born aren"t guarded. Other females guard their eggs: e. g. Skink: female red-backed salamanders guard eggs in moist rotting logs. Most salamanders usually lay their eggs in water. Female wolf spiders carry their eggs around: egg sac held by spinnerettes, babies carried on mother"s back. Male bass, phalarope birds, giant water bugs. Fall = mating season; cow moose carries baby throughout winter.
