PSYC 2P20 Lecture Notes - Spatial Frequency, Akinetopsia, Dyslexia
Document Summary
Perception: the process by which we make sense of our surroundings by interpreting the information from our sense organs (i. e. , sight, smell, taste, touch, hear, only aware of a very small proportion of the information that is processed perceptually (cid:224) we are unaware of everything that we perceive, not always consciously aware, selective attention plays this role. Bottom up processing: processing that takes info. from the stimulus, each stimulus is broken down into elementary features, ex. color, line orientation, curves, depth, movement, location, spatial frequency, size, texture, motion, features are processed independently in specialized areas (cid:224) being processed simultaneously. Top down processing: we bring expectancies, experience, context, stored knowledge, rules of the world, ex. recognition of shovel is faster in garden picture than kitchen picture, but reverse for toaster (cid:224) what you expect, expectations and context can influence ones perception of an object or how one recognizes an object, both bottom up and top down processing is used for identification.
