CIS 140 Lecture 6: L6- Modularity of Visual Processing
Document Summary
Left eye- rvf- temporal retinal, lvf- nasal retina (opposite sides of the hemisphere) Relationship between outside stimulus and where it gets in the brain. Right eye- rvf- nasal retina, lvf- temporal retina. Temporal retina- stays on same side at optic chiasm. Nasal retina- crosses over at optic chiasm. Flashes of light- measure where you can/cannot see flashes. Info from l and r visual fields initially processed separately by r and l hemispheres. Center of visual field takes up more space on visual cortex- objects close together stay close together on cortex. Hierarchical elaboration of response selectivities across visual areas. Object specific cortex- diff parts of brain specialized for different objects. Why and how is it used: determining how removal of a specific brain area affects an animal"s behavior, determine function of a particular part of the brain, test animal"s capacity, remove/destroy part of brain and test again.
