BIOL 1F26 Lecture 9: bio lec 9
Document Summary
Will examine a different area of biotech industry, one focused on using biological organisms to clean up the mess created by industry and society at large. Will look at both historical and present day bioremediation techniques. Will cover their bene ts both to humanity and the environment. The use of living organisms to break down compounds in the environment. These compounds can be natural wastes seen in nature normally or arti cial substances such as chemicals from industry (eg. plastics, toxins, etc) More formally these compounds are both described as waste; either biological waste (eg food based garbage etc) or chemical waste (eg oils) Generally bioremediation focuses on breaking down waste into something useful for the environment, or at the very least less toxic to living organisms. This is very case speci c: a unique organism, enzyme, etc. will be used for one speci c type of waste, another different organism will be used for another waste, etc.
