BIOL 1F26 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Aeration, The Techniques, Aquaponics
Document Summary
The use of organisms to break down compounds in the environment. These compounds can be natural wastes seen in nature normally or artificial substances such as chemicals from industry (plastics, toxins) These compounds are both described as waste; either biological waste (food based garbage) or chemical waste (oils) Bioremediation focuses on breaking down waste into something useful for the environment or at the very least less toxic to living organisms. This is very case specific: a unique organism, enzyme, will be used for one specific type of waste and another different organism will be used for another type of waste. The general idea is to find and modify organisms which are biologically useful at dealing with one specific agent, then use that organism when needed to deal with the buildup of an agent of interest. An outhouse is an example of bioremediation. Over time the interior of the pit builds up with beneficial bacteria and microbes.
