Document Summary

This week we will look to animal modi cation, speci cally sh. Similar techniques (and a few new ones) have been used to boost production of livestock. We will touch on the environmental trade-offs of some common practices currently in use today. One problem with over shing: some sh are very long lived, causing the population to adjust quite slowly (eg. red snapper can live for up to 50 years) Typically older lived organisms take longer to reach sexual maturity and reproduce, putting the species at risk. Generally a longer lived animal takes longer to reach a large size, meaning more and more (smaller) young animals need to be caught to supply the same weight of just a few (larger) older sh. In addition to size, spawning rates also decline. Rebound time is slow, these sh have been over shed for decades, it will take decades to repair the damage.
