BIOL 1F26 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Capsaicin, Drug Delivery, Tetrodotoxin
Document Summary
Problem with overfishing: some fish are very long lived, causing the population to adjust quite slowly. Typically older lived organisms take longer to reach sexual maturity and reproduce, putting the species at risk. Generally a longer lived animal takes longer to reach a large size, meaning more smaller young animals need to be caught to supply the same weigh of just a few larger older fish. In addition to size, spawning (reproduction) rates also decline. Rebound time is slow, fish have been overfished for decades and it will take decades to repair the damage. Money is a major problem: red snapper industry brings in millions of dollars into the us economy. Moratoriums have been proposed but not accepted, current plants focus on reduced catch quotes and shorter fishing seasons. Modified plants will create a slower recovery. Major complicating problem: carrying capacity and market demand. Aquaculture- the cultivation of any aquatic species for commercial uses.
