Document Summary

Sampling how we get data: often can"t get (cid:449)hole population, less time consuming and costly, less cumbersome, more practical. Sampling frame (beginning) list of items that are in the population and that can be sampled: population lists, directories, databsaes, map, parts of population excluded = bias/inaccuracy. Items chosen without regard to probability of occurrence: convenience sample selected based only on being easy, inexpensive, quick to sample. Snowball sampling: - existing study subjects recruit more acquaintances as part of sample: judgement sample perceived experts or most appropriate items selected by convenience, quota sample pre-set quota of groups chosen by convenience. Srs + systematic: simple, cheap to use, effective against bias, may not be best representation of underlying characteristics of pop. Stratified: ensure representation of individuals in population, effective against bias, most efficient, but costly. Distribution of all possible values of a sample statistic for a given sample size selected from population. Statistics interested in sample mean of population distribution.
