The Central Dogma and an overview of transcription, translation, and DNA
replication.
Information is encoded in multiple different ways
Replication DNA is replicated by DNA
polymerase (All types essentially have same
enzymatic mechanism) add bases (in the form of
nucleotides) to an existing DNA chain.
DNA polymerase uses ATP/GTP/CTP/TTP
breaks these molecules and adds each time it
adds a nucleotide.
Transcription RNA polymerase
Also adds nucleotides to an existing RNA chain
Translation Ribosome enzyme
(RNA Enzyme/ RNAzyme)
Originally, billions of years ago, all enzymes were
RNA Enzymes
Now most are protein enzymes - DNA Pol and RNA Pol are both proteins
The part of the ribosome (an RNA-protein complex) that does enzymatic
activity is RNA
Protein just holds all the different RNA chains together, doesn’t participate
in enzymatic activity
The information is in the structures, sequences, and amounts
(concentrations) of each enzyme produced
50 RNA does not mean 50 proteins produced! The concentrations of
different proteins are NOT dependent on the number of each DNA gene
that exists.

Document Summary

Lecture 7: francis crick was a failed physicist. The central dogma and an overview of transcription, translation, and dna replication. is. Information is encoded in multiple different ways replicated by dna. Replication polymerase (all types essentially have same enzymatic mechanism) add bases (in the form of nucleotides) to an existing dna chain. Dna polymerase uses atp/gtp/ctp/ttp breaks these molecules and adds each time it adds a nucleotide. Also adds nucleotides to an existing rna chain. Originally, billions of years ago, all enzymes were. Now most are protein enzymes - dna pol and rna pol are both proteins. The part of the ribosome (an rna-protein complex) that does enzymatic activity is rna. Protein just holds all the different rna chains together, doesn"t participate in enzymatic activity. 50 rna does not mean 50 proteins produced! The concentrations of different proteins are not dependent on the number of each dna gene that exists. the structures, sequences, and amounts information is in.
