Week 2 lecture notes part 1 & 2. Police are considered a social institution whereas policing is a set of process with specific functions. However, police are not found in every society but policing is part of social order and control. Additionally, a police organisation created by the state is one example of modern day policing. In terms of the police, it is a male dominated profession that runs on a hierarchical system. As of 2017, the queensland police had 8725 male officers compared to 3244 women officers. In regards to the history of the police force, it is a relatively recent phenomenon. Historically, policing was done by communities and wasn"t professionalized or institutionalized. According to sir robert peel of the london metro police (1829) there are several key principles of policing. Correctional: prevention, public approval, policing by consent, respect and authority, public are police and police are public.
