What can we learn by looking at musical preferences: fixed over our life, depends on our personal characteristics, can change over time inform by the context in our life, experiences, relationship. Identity theory (mead (1826-1931) and cooley (1862-1929: set of created meanings that help define who we are, labels eg. student, labels with meanings - roles", socially constructed - social roles, shared meanings, constantly under construction - life experiences. Structure of identity: multiple role identities", complex structure, hierarchy (system of ranking) of identities, context: roles we value most in a particular situation sit higher in hierarchy. Self or identity: self is the conscious understanding we form of our identity, reflexive process. Identity construction (a reciprocal process: self is dependent on the social context and at a broader level in society, society is, in turn, shaped by actions of the self" in these roles.
