Addiction: continued involvement with the substance or behaviour despite its negative consequences. Everyone has different reasons: to socialise with friend s, to have fun, peer pressure, relaxation, curiosity, to forget problems and escape. Men most likely to use than women. Age is most likely to use 18-14. Drugs are not the only form of addictions. Certain behaviours are also addictive (called process addictions: to the brain, a reward is a reward. Disordered gambling: recognised as a mental health disorder : they lie, the escape, tolerance, desire to perfirm behaviour, strong biological component (gamblers have decreased blood flow to brains reward system, thrill seeking, tolerance builds up. Exercise addiction: characteristic signs, always working out (alone, rigid exercise plan, > 2 hours daily, exercising when sick or injured, skipping social events for exercise, common with people with eating disorder. Types of drugs: prescription, over-the counter, recreational-alcohol. Routines of administration: oral- swallowing, drinking, eating- slower. Intramuscular: subcutaneous, transdermal- through the skin, nicotin patch.
