Document Summary

Cause is always present when the disease occurs, but the presence of the causes does not always lead to disease. A cause that increases the probability or likelihood of developing the disease. Smoking is a risk factor, though not a cause, of a variety of diseases. Strictly, smoking is neither a sufficient or a necessary cause of cancer. We don"t know if all people who are smokers will develop cancer eventually. We also know that not all people with lung cancer are smokers -> other causes. Must just view it as a risk factor cause. A and b have an association with each other. If we know about factor a, then we will know something about factor b. Just because an association exists, it does not mean one factor causes another. Need to think about the likelihood of a meaningful relationship. Because factor 1 exists, so must factor 2 exist.
