Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
- Information and Communication Technology includes:
o Computers
o The Internet
o Electronic delivery systems (radios, televisions, and projectors etc)
▪ Anything that connects us to the internet
ICT use
- A number of previous studies have shown that an appropriate use of ICT can:
o Raise educational quality and connect learning to real life situations
▪ Especially nowadays
▪ Even the most basic of trades require ICT savvy kids
o Develop skills which will be an indispensable prerequisite for learners
▪ Includes excel
General Benefits of ICT use
- ICT tends to expand access to education
o Available 24 hours/7 days a week
o Learning and teaching no longer depend exclusively on printed materials
o However, what is missing when teachers rely on this?
▪ Kids in poverty are disadvantaged
▪ Do not presume everyone has internet access
What are some other benefits of using ICT within a classroom?
- Can help disabled kids to learn (assisted technology)
- Can be fun, facilitates pride
- Engages kids
Specific Benefits of ICT use
- Assist students in accessing digital information efficiently and effectively
o However, we need to teach students to be critical thinking skills
