Freud suggested there were 3 great shocks to the collective human ego: Psychoanalysis wiped out wundtian psychology, titchenerian structuralism, and functional psychology; behaviorism was dominant in american psychology. Psychoanalysis arose from medicine and psychiatry in attempts to treat people labeled as mentally ill. It"s not an official school of thought comparable to others studied in previous chapters. Not accepted by wundt or titchener because it could not be observed through introspection. Freud"s nightmare of bird-like creatures carrying his mother. Leibnitz believed monads had different degrees of consciousness ranging from completely unconscious to clearly conscious. Monadology = leibnitz"s theory of psychic entities, called monads, which are similar to perceptions. Johann friedrich herbart (1776-1841) refined leibnitz"s notion of unconsciousness into the concept of threshold of consciousness.
