Includes nasal vestibule, nasal septum, superior/middle/inferior nasal conchae, & posterior nasal apertures. Lined with respiratory mucosa composed of pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. Floor of cavity is formed by hard and soft palates. Provides passage of air from this nasal cavity. Tonsils in this region provide protection against pathogens. Provides for passage of air and swallowed food. Prevents food from entering the lower respiratory tract. Pharyngeal tonsil & pharyngotympanic tubes openings in this region. Stratified squamous epithelium located superior to vocal folds. Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium located inferior to vocal folds. Located inferior to the thyroid cartilage and superior to the trachea. Single flap of elastic cartilage anchored to the inner rim of the thyroid cartilage. Composed of elastic fibers covered with mucous membrane. Mucosal folds similar in composition to the vocal folds. Attaches the larynx to the trachea via the cricotracheal ligament. Forms a lid over the larynx during swallowing. Help to close the glottis when we swallow.
