Psychopathology - the symptoms and signs of mental disorders (ex. depressed mood, panic attacks, and bizarre beliefs) Abnormal psychology - the application of psychological science to the study of mental disorders. Psychosis - a term that refers to several types of severe mental disorders in which the person is out of contact with reality. Bipolar disorder symptoms - distinct episodes of mood disturbance, some involving mania or hypomania and some involving serious depression. Manic episode - a period of time lasting at least one week in which the person feels abnormally and persistently happy and energetic, with noticeably less need for sleep. Syndrome - a group of symptoms that appear together and are assumed to represent a specific type of disorder. Each symptom is a fallible (or imperfect) indicator of the presence of the disorder.
