U09 Psych 100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5.3: Auditory Cortex, Oval Window, Basilar Membrane
Document Summary
Audition hearing; second to vision as a source of information about the world. A mechanism for determining what is happening in an environment, and it also provides a medium for spoken language. Hearing music results from differences in brain activity, nt from differentiated sound waves. The process of hearing begins when the movements and vibrations of objects cause the displacement of air molecules. Displaces air molecules produce a change in air pressure, and that change travels through the air. Sound wave the pattern of the changes in air pressure during a period of time amplitude determines a sound wave"s loudness. Higher amplitude = louder sound (vice versa) frequency determines a sound wave"s pitch. Higher frequency = higher pitch (vice versa) Measured in vibrations per second, hertz (hz) Most humans detect frequencies from 20-20,000 hz. The ossicles" vibration causes the oval window to vibrate : creating pressure waves in the cochlear fluid. These waves prompt the basilar membrane to move.
