Document Summary
Maturation -> the orderly sequence of biological growth. Nature sets the basic course of development and nurture adjusts it. From infancy on, brain and mind develop together. You are born with most of the brain cells you will ever have but the wiring among those cells were not fully developed. From ages 3 to 6, the most rapid growth occurs in your frontal lobes, enabling rational thinking. The last cortical areas to develop are the association areas (linked with thinking, memory, and language) Mark rosenzweig, david krech, and colleague"s experiment. Compared brain density of rats in impoverished and communal environments; rats in a communal environment had significantly heavier brains. Critical period -> an optimal period early in the life of an organism when exposure to certain stimuli or experiences produces normal development. The maturing brain"s rule: use it or lose it.
