Document Summary

Dr. martin luther king jr. letter from birmingham jail (textbook notes) He is responding to the clergymen who called his protest unwise and untimely . He noticed all of the injustice in birmingham, how he wanted to change it, and how the clergymen were unaware to the situation. The people of birmingham left the negro community with no choice. Since the people of birmingham had broken promises to the negro community, they planned a peaceful protest. One has a moral and legal responsibility to obey just laws and conversely has the responsibility to disobey unjust laws . Mlk defines a law as a manmade code that squares with moral law/law of god. Therefore an unjust law is one that is out of harmony with moral law, and degrades human life. One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with the willingness to accept the penalty.
