Problems in writing a history of psychology. Historiography : study of the proper way to write history. Ancient peoples studied each other to see who was trustworthy/reliable. What to include how it became that way; stocking (1965) Presentism : looking at psychology today and attempting to show. Historicism : looking at somethings history just for its own sake, not. Great individuals that are associated with big ideas tend to have to compare it to present; copleston (2001) just synthesize that idea into a more clear, forceful idea. Charles darwin is associated with the evolutionary theory but it existed long before him, he just made it more clear and straightforward. We focus on individuals who did the most to develop an idea. Ideas must be compatible with existing ideas. Great-person approach : emphasizing work of great individuals. Historical development approach : focusing on the individuals.
