Definition 1: the knowledge and use of language for oral and written communication. Definition 2 (more specific): internalized knowledge of the phonological and syntactic structures of language, known as linguistic competence and the ability to use language in various social situations, known as sociolinguistic competence. Linguistic competence refers to mastery of the formal system of language (sounds, sentences and vocabulary) Sociolinguistic competence refers to the use of language to accomplish goals which includes language functions or purposes for language as well as the social strategic use of language to accomplish communicative goals (pragmatics) Speakers of all languages and dialects share common communicative abilities as they use speaking, listening, writing, reading and visual literacy.
