Diane macintyre is a nurse for two years on a general medical floor that treats many diabetic and stroke patients. She gives direct patient care and plans basic care for other nursing personnel to carry out. In the past, she worked overtime at home or in the hospital library writing procedures. Diane works without pay: arlene estes thinks she is foolish because of it. Diane shows up to meeting even on her days off. Diane wants to show that nursing is an important profession and that nurses have more to contribute than passing meds and giving baths. Diane thinks that it is good to work without pay for overtime seeing how she doesn"t accept pay. On the other hand, arlene thinks that nurses should be paid overtime because it is unfair to staff nurses who are paid hourly. The connection between success and long hours is so much assumed that venture capitalists are said to make investment decisions.
