Document Summary

Motivation- psychological processes that arouse and direct goal-directed behavior: you can"t see it, it must be inferred from one"s behavior. Personal factors: personality, ability, core self-evaluations, emotions, attitudes, needs. Contextual factors: organizational culture, cross-cultural values, physical environment, rewards and reinforcement, group norms, communication technology, leader behavior, organizational design. Rewards: extrinsic- satisfaction in the payoff from others. Reward- is the payoff, such as money, a person receives from others for performing a task: intrinsic- satisfaction in performing the task itself. Reward- satisfaction, such as feelings of accomplishment, a person receives from performing a task. Why is motivation important: you want to motivate people to, join your organization, stay with your organization, show up to work at your organization, be engaged while at your organization, do extra for your organization. Four major perspectives on motivation: content perspectives- also known as need-based perspectives, are theories that emphasize the needs that motivate people, needs- physiological or psychological deficiencies that arouse behavior.
