Document Summary

Molecules that are made up only of carbon and hydrogen are hydrocarbons. Carbon- hydrogen covalent bonds store a lot of energy. Electrons in carbon to carbon and carbon two hydrogen bonds are evenly distributed since they have similar electronegativities so hydrocarbons are nonpolar. Functional groups are connected to a carbon to hydrogen core and they contain specific molecular groups (-oh or hydroxyl group) Isomers: organic molecules having the same molecular or empirical formula that can exist in different forms. If there are differences in the actual structure of their carbon skeleton we call them structural isomers. Stereoisomers have the same carbon skeleton but different how the groups are attached to the skeleton. A molecule that has a mirror image version is called a chiral molecule. Chiral compounds are characterized by their effect on polarized light. 2 chiral forms are d for dextrorotatory and l for levorotatory.
