PSY 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Selective Perception, Hypnosis, Graphology
Document Summary
There are many proverbs in psychology that people hold true because they believe they are common sense. However psychological research has shown that many of these proverbs are false or hold very little truth. For example, opposites don"t attract but rather people who share common traits and values often find themselves in the healthiest of relationships. The popular psychology industry is the biggest culprits for teaching us incorrect information because there are so many sources that expose us to these false truths". Newspapers, the internet, and even magazine articles can be found in abundance about psychological facts" that modern studies actually prove false. Although popular psychology can teach us some important and true things about human behavior, it also teaches us as many if not more false truths. This is termed psychomythology and is important to address because there are very few resources out there for people to learn about the false perceptions we are taught about human behavior.
