Gnrh neurons are affected by puberty hormones and are in the brain. Affect the hormonal feedback loop: gonads, glands, brain. The set point changes as puberty begins. Brain responds to hormones with the adrenal glands and cortisol is released. During puberty, kids are less well able to respond to stress and are vulnerable. The glands are still maturing so cortisol is felt more sensitively. Kisspeptin, leptin (determined by fat content), and biological predisposition stimulates start of puberty. Genes give you a range where you will begin (early and late age), but the environment (diet, exercise, sleep) tells you exactly when you will begin. Melatonin (more light, less melatonin, less sleep) suppresses the start of puberty. Growth spurt: hit peak height velocity, earlier for girls than for boys.
