PSY-3705 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Hookup Culture, Casual Sex, Limerence
Document Summary
Sexual relationships are motivated by many factors: two leading factors are physical attraction and romantic love, but there are a wide variety of other motives. Demographic factors affect sexual attitudes: antimiscegenation statutes--state laws that prohibited marriage (and sometimes cohabitation or sex) between persons of different races, public opinion about extra-marital sex actually becoming more negative. Casual sex has more appeal to men than to women: casual sex--sexual encounters that do not take place within a lasting sexual relationship, hooking up (the new norm?) Sociosexuality--interest or engagement in sex without commitment: hooking up--uncommitted sex with an acquaintance. Non-cohabiting relationships are often short-lived: non-cohabiting relationship--an ongoing sexual relationship between two people who do not live together. Interpersonal scripts--patterns of behavior that develop between couples. Serial monogamy--engagement in a series of monogamous relationships. Same-sex relationships have their own scripts: non-cohabiting relationships may evolve rapidly. Intimacy--the sense of connectedness in an established relationship.
