PHYS-1602 Chapter Notes - Chapter 23: Delta Chi, Electric Flux, Gaussian Surface
Document Summary
Gauss" law relates the electric field at points on a (closed) gaussian surface to the net charge enclosed by that surface. The amount of electric field (lines) piercing a patch is called the electric flux (delta phi) Delta a vector should be on a patch piercing outward. If the flux is positive, it should be going outward so cos 0 = 1, if it is negative, it should be going inward so cos 180 = -1. Net flux in terms of total charge: if q(enc) is positive, the net flux is outward, if q(enc) is negative, the net flux is inward. If an excess charge is placed on an isolated conductor, that amount of charge will move entirely to the surface of the conductor. None of the excess charge will be found within the body of the conductor. To find the magnitude of the electric field just outside the conductor is: where sigma is surface charge density.
