More than just a physical relocation - it was a political revolution. More than a reaction of defeated segregationists. Politics of resistance to desegregation in the urban south (and north) became the roots of a modern, suburban conservative political rhetoric. The pattern in which humans moved to, and built up the cities in which they i"ve. Urbanization as a way of life - social relationships profoundly shaped by the built environment. Premodern city - best to be centrally located. Industrial city - wealth moved away from city. Suburbia is quintessential physical achievement of the united states - kenneth jackson. Low density and absence of sharp divisions between black and white populations. Columbians - working class, gauche violence - violence most found objectionable. Kkk - working class and professionals, police of cers and councilmen, legitimized violence. West end cooperative corporation - neighborhood associations. The goal of each was to stop desegregation in housing. More public violence -> illegally -> fewer supports.
